Welcome words from Professor Zeljko Loparic, President of the IWA
Greetings to everyone!
The year 2021 is the 50th anniversary of British child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Donald
Winnicott’s death, on January 25, 1971. Also it is the 125th anniversary of his birth, on April 7, 1896. There
is no better tribute to a scientist and thinker than to highlight his legacy. Winnicott’s legacy is his work of
extraordinary originality and his request for the continuation of the revolution he started.
The International Winnicott Association (IWA) is a worldwide academic civil entity. The purpose of
the IWA is to promote the research and teaching of Winnicottian Psychoanalysis, as well as training
activities and the exchange of experiences among professionals working in this field. It works in
collaboration with universities, psychoanalytical groups, societies, centers, research and teaching
foundations, and other scientific and clinical institutions that develop activities in this field. The IWA also
aims at promoting and supporting activities related to social work, development, institutionalization, and
diffusion of Winnicottian Psychoanalysis in general.
In order to achieve the above aims, IWA holds an international biennial Congress, inviting
representatives of member groups from Argentina, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Israel, Italy,
Portugal, Greece, China etc. and other well-known experts in the field to make theme reports, exchange
research progress and clinical work experience, and plan further discipline development.
The Fourth International Winnicott Association Congress will be held online from November 3 to 7,
2021. This biennial Congress is sponsored and funded by the IWA; Beijing Winnicott Study and Research
Group, Beijing Winnicott Institute, and Beijing Mental Health Facilitating Center will organize the meeting;
Brazilian Institute of Winnicottian Psychoanalysis (IBPW) will co-organize with the local organizer.
The general topic of the 4th Congress is:
“Winnicott´s settings and therapeutic procedures
– with possible applications or suggestions to the recent pandemic”.
The main purpose of this Congress is to explore the new paradigm, new treatment settings, new treatment
techniques and procedures of the Winnicottian psychoanalysis under the framework of the Winnicott’s
theory of maturational processes, and their groping and applicability in the recent convid-19 pandemic
predicament. It not only covers Winnicott’s clinical theory as a whole, but also hopes to specifically
emphasize how Winnicott’s clinical theory can be applied in the context of fighting the pandemic.
On behalf of IWA, I take great pleasure to invite you to attend this Congress.
Sincerely hope that you could join us!
