The AP Association began as SPPP – SOCIEDADE PORTUGUESA DE PSICOTERAPIA PSICANALÍTICA (PORTUGUESE SOCIETY OF PSICHOANALITIC PSYCHOTHERAPY) IN 2005, having blown up and starting, with new founder members, the constitution of AP – ASSOCIAÇÃO PORTUGUESA DE PSICANÁLISE E PSICOTERAPIA PSICANALÍTICA (PORTUGUESE ASSOCIATION OF PSYCHOANALISYS AND PSICHOANALITIC PSYCHOTHERAPY) In 18 April 2008, with the 2 departments of PSYCHOANALISYS and PSICHOANALITIC PSYCHOTHERAPY.

The Institute began its training activities in October 2008, with the group that has finished theorical training in 2012.

The AP’s main objectives are the research and investigation and training in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytical therapy, the realization of courses (practical and theoretical), seminars, colloquiums and congresses and scientific and technical divulgence.

Principles and Ethics

AP defends as fundamental principles:

Therapeutic principles: those that assure that psychoanalysis is adequately conducted and has as objective the development of personal knowledge, which becomes conscientious through a permanent dialogue with the unconscious. Psychoanalysis will hence be the analysis of the psychic to bring forth it’s constituting elements and operative processes.

Ethical Principles: given that psychoanalysis consists of, in it’s broader definition, a specific form of dialogue and emotional experience which conduces to consciousness and to the realization of the Self, for ethical and scientific reasons, the diverse forms of dialogue can not be regulated by impositions exterior to the analytical contract established between the analyst and patient. The aspects previously mentioned also apply to the training and supervision. This form of understanding psychoanalysis mandatorily implies a specific, case-by-case, contract.

From AP’s point of view psychoanalytical ethics, are essentially the commitment between the psychoanalyst and the patient, which in turn depends on the nature of the bond established between the latter, a bond for knowledge in search of truth, that is, to encounter oneself, one’s authentic self, one’s intrinsic truth: one’s genuine desire, one’s own values, and truly determining ideals.
Psychoanalytical ethics is not derived from any exogenous and heteronomous moral, whether of religious, political, ideological origin, or dictated by cultural tradition, circumstances, or by the utopia conceived by the belonging group nor by the normative constructs of the affiliation society. The psychoanalytical ethics result from the endogenous and autonomous moral, resultant from the empathy and compassion, and from the respect for the nature and freedom of others.
In coherence with these principles, AP will not accept any funds from any institution that can compromise the principles and intellectual freedom expressed in its statutes.

Scientific principles of free growth of theoretical-practical knowledge: the object of the study of the psychoanalyst and of the psychoanalytical psychotherapist cannot be limited to the definition of one single author, but rather, it should gather all meaningful studies which have been recognized among the scientific community. Such a principle is important in assuring openness and evolution, without which science would perish.

Training principles: the best and safest way to train an analyst is his/her own
psychoanalytical process. Additionally, psychoanalytical and psychotherapeutic training is also constituted by attending the training course defined by AP, as well as by the supervision of clinical cases.

Consequentially to these principles, AP intends to stimulate the dialogue of psychoanalysis with diverse areas of scientific knowledge as well as to maintain exchanges with universities, seeking to awaken in students the interest for the scientific developments of psychoanalysis.

Furthermore, with the same concern, AP integrates, for scientific, technical and didactic purposes, two departments: the Department of Psychoanalysis and the Department of Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy, each with it’s own specific training and graduation, given that these are different psychotherapy techniques with different therapeutic goals.

Looking stimulate dialogue between psychoanalysis and several areas of scientific knowledge as well as maintain exchanges with universities and other entities seeking to foster in students and the general public interest in scientific developments of Psychoanalysis, the AP promotes 2 or 3 times a year, interdisciplinary scientific meetings (in Lisbon and other points of Portugal).

Study group on Winnicott’s thought
