3rd International Winnicott Association Congress, to be held on 14 and 15 June 2019 in Lisbon, will focus on the theme: The Winnicottian therapist.
Donald W. Winnicott’s clinic rests on three pillars. It contains a theory of human maturational processes, based on a highly complex view of human nature and of the potential for personal, social and instinctual development, the realization of which depends critically on environmental provision. A companion to this theory is Winnicott´s maturational pathology dedicated to the study of distortions or even interruptions the maturational processes, resulting from environmental failures and defensive reactions to them. The Winnicottian pathology in turn makes possible the elaboration of procedures, that the Winnicottian therapist may put into practice in appropriate settings.
Supported by this theoretical framework and making use of his vast clinical experience Winnicott developed a series of innovatory programs in the fields of pediatrics, psychoanalysis of children and adults, child psychiatry and social assistance, which do not provide so much techniques to be followed mechanically as guiding-lines to be used by properly qualified individual or institutional therapeutic agents in assisting patients to become integrated and realized human beings.
It is this figure of the Winnicottian therapist that will be discussed in the proceedings and debates at this 3rd IWA Congress: his/her tasks and ways of being, behaving, understanding and providing, by analysis or otherwise, for the unattended maturational needs of patients.
